My six year old is a creative soul. She loves all things arts and crafts. Just the other day she can home from Y day camp and said it was the BEST day ever! It was a rainy day so they were stuck inside all day which meant she got to do LOTS of arts and craft projects! She’s a girl after my own heart!

The biggest issue with her artistic tendencies is she wants to display everything! All. Over. The. House. Having a new home, I’m not crazy about tape, ticky tack, command strips, tacks, stickers or one time, even gum, all over my walls. She loves to “decorate” her room with all of her art. I needed to find a way to let her express her individuality, not stifle her creativity and proudly display all of her work, but still not cause me to have an anxiety attack every time I went into her room. I was having this same issue at my work office (I work at our YMCA and she comes there after school each day; hence my office is also full of her art).

My coworker and dear friend suggested putting a bulletin board in my office. I decided to apply this same concept to her bedroom, but I didn’t want a bulletin board look. As a solution, I took a large bulletin board that we were going to throw away at work because it had seen better days, and covered it with a curtain that I had in my fabric storage container. Back story: when I originally ordered the curtains that are in my kids’ rooms, they sent four panels and NONE of the stripes matched up. After informing the company, they sent me new curtains and let me keep the old ones. I thought multiple times about what to do with the old, so I’m glad I finally found something. Anyways..you could also use just plain ole fabric.

I upholstered the bulletin board just like you would with anything. I laid the board face down on the curtain panel, pulled back the sides first and staped (no special staples here; a good stapler will work just fine if you just enough staples). My bulletin board had a metal frame so I had to make sure the fabric was large enough for me to staple further in and actually hit board and not metal. I then made a fold on each corner (not unlike a birthday present) and folded down the top and bottom to staple.

Voila! About ten minutes of my time and I was done. Zo was in love and couldn't wait to cover it with her masterpieces. Now for the most important part: the rule is that she can put whatever on the bulletin board and fill it to the brim (and trust me, she has), but if she wants to hang something else on it and it is full, something has to come down. Then that piece of art will either go in the trash can (without her knowing) or most often, her memory box. This gives her the power to control what is on the board and pride in her art being displayed so professionally while keeping stuff off my walls and doors. Win win in my book!

How do you display you kids' masterpieces? Leave your ideas in the comments! I have two more kids that will soon be bringing home artwork too so I'm always looking for more ideas!

**I realize these aren’t the most in depth instructions and pictures. One, because it’s not that complicated of a project. Two, I didn't intent to blog about it when doing it. In the future, I promise I will take more step by step pictures of the process! I’m learning as I go!
